  OBD Diagnose

Basically OBD is invented to monitor the emission-relevant systems and to secure are constantly low emissions. Should one of the involved components fail or is showing a malfunction, the event is saved and depending on the relevance for the environment corresponding actions are taken. So a single ignition failure will have no consequences for normal driving operation as far as possible. However it will be saved and can be read out via the OBD interface. In case of a more severe event, e.g. the failure of the lambda probe, permanent ignition failures etc. an emergency program is started that makes it possible to read the next garage on own resources.

The manufactures started very soon to make other systems and their errors readable via OBD. This went so far, that currently nearly everything could be read out, set and reset via the OBD interface. E.g.: In cars of the VAG company one can already set the reaction of the central locking system (when the key switch is pressed, should the windows close or not, same for the sunroof), via the comfort function; one can also set the displays in the dashboard, the air condition, the gear reaction of the automatic shift, the sound settings of the radio, etc. Even the emission check and the setting of the CO2 values can be done via the OBD interface.

The question remains what possibilities of diagnostics I have on my own car, which control units are included, what can be set, what hard- and software will I need to do the things that I want to do with my car.

For diagnostics one needs to know at first, if the own car is equipped with OBD I or OBD II. Then the question remains, if a pure diagnose should be performed or if one wants to do some chip tuning or a tachometer reset for the car. Depending on this the selection of hardware differs. One should keep in mind, that not all hardware items (interface) work with all software. To check the possibilities of diagnosing of your car, please look at the area OBD techniques / plus connections.
